Everybody agrees that such an addition would be useful, the hangup always is to find the right wording. Suresh's suggestion in the second thread is the closest I've seen to a usable statement.

I think Anton is the only person with the keys to the FAQ, and may be busy right now!

Perhaps in this thread we can agree on the exact piece of text to add, so he only has to copy and paste something when he has the time?

@Tom, it's not that we expect the crossposters to read the faq; it's that we'll have a place to point them after the fact, so we don't have to write the same stuff in the comments over and over.

Good idea. It is unfortunate that such basic etiquette needs to be highlighted.

IMO the comments to people who cross post with no reference are not sufficiently brusque. The lack of courtesy of some posters who are asking for assistance is beyond belief to people of my generation. Another of my pet peeves is that some posters do not follow up on their post for several days. If you don't have time to check and respond to replies, DON'T ASK A QUESTION!

Since the response to silently-crossposted questions can often be quite brusque, I think this would be helpful. (Only insofar as anyone reads the FAQ, but for purposes of this discussion I think we've already restricted to that prior assumption.)
