But I'm a bit hesitant to make even small changes unless there's a really good argument for it.

Right now, you can see the original text by double clicking on the error box (in fact, you can see the original text for any jsMath output by double clicking it). If you have the reputation, just edit the post to fix the error. I fix these errors whenever I see them, and it's always a quick procedure. If you don't have the rep, or if you're feeling lazy, flag the post.
