Oh, I didn't know that about double-clicking, that's helpful. Perhaps this information could be added to the "tips and tricks" page or the jsmath section of the FAQ?

(I mostly see this happen in comments, since they can't be edited.)

I don't see any config option for doing that, but it looks like I can fairly easily get that behavior by modifying one line in the Error function in jsMath.js (the original text will still be in italics and inside the yellow box with the red border). But I'm a bit hesitant to make even small changes unless there's a really good argument for it.

Right now, you can see the original text by double clicking on the error box (in fact, you can see the original text for any jsMath output by double clicking it). If you have the reputation, just edit the post to fix the error. I fix these errors whenever I see them, and it's always a quick procedure. If you don't have the rep, or if you're feeling lazy, flag the post.

It's not uncommon to see, in comments which attempt to use jsmath, an entire block of math turn into a box with the text "Unknown control sequence (blah)", which is often not enough to guess what the author wrote. Would it be possible to have jsmath simply output the original text in the case of an error?
