It would be "truly unethical" to post homework questions without the need for a statement. But it's also stated in the FAQ, as is the google search. Also, sometimes a question is not possible to google until you know how to phrase it in words.

By the way, perhaps the OEIS could be added to the list of useful sites.

Fair enough.. I guess I was already a little put down when the computer thought I was a spam-bot =]. Perhaps it's not worth the bother to everyone to address a marginal proportion of poor questions.

No, it's just not worth putting barriers in people's way. For the vast majority of users, these questions would be annoying and superfluous.

I personally would find those questions a little insulting, and I expect that many other mathematicians would as well.

Hi all,

Great site, thanks to the moderators and creators! I wonder if it would be worthwhile to include the following two checkboxes when submitting questions?

1) This is not a homework problem for a course in which I am enrolled.
2) I have performed a few internet searches and looked at wikipedia and have not found a satisfactory answer.

This would have the effect of making it truly unethical to post hw questions, hopefully reducing the number of them, and also would eliminate the need for "Is this a homework question?" and "Have you performed a google search?" to appear in the comments under the question. I know one doesn't want to discourage asking of questions, but I thought it might be a worthwhile streamline. The other day I was about to ask a question about reflection groups over finite fields and thought to search google first - I found my answer without using up anyone's time!
