You can create the truncated tag for now, and then later when (if?) the character limit for tags is increased, the administrators can change the tag name.

Here I tried to create a tag resolution-of-singularities, of which the last two letters were thrown away because of tag length limit.

Therefore I make a feature request for longer tag names. Of course, this needs to be done at meta.stackexchange, but I suppose I should first find out whether it was requested already, and if so, let me make this a request for more upvotes over there for the same.
