In the directory 'conf' are some language definition files. If you change the text in there then you can change what's displayed on the log-in form. If it's too opaque, let me know (here or via email) and I'll look up what I did in the morning.

One word of warning: the files in the conf directory tend to be owned by the httpd user. If you don't have root access to your host, then you have to do a bit of PHP trickery to get around this. Let me know if that's a problem and I'll dredge up the trickery from my databanks tomorrow.

Is there some way to change the text of the "Membership Application Form" (registration form) so that it's more inviting?

This should be especially relevant as some people (including me at first) incorrectly think that Meta is by invitation only (which I think it says on a login page).
