I knew and loved IRC, but now it's just lame and awful, and I want nothing to do with it.

I've installed irssi, and it seems quite reasonable, but freenode now says that I'm not the channel operator. I should be able to solve this tomorrow.

That said, if anyone wants invites or links to the existing waves, let me know.

Two big questions:

  • How familar are mathematicians with IRC?
    • I suspect the answer is "very little".
  • How would this be formally associated to MO?
    • If it proves useful amongst the "meta crowd", then I'd suggest adding a link along the topbar at MO, next to meta.

I think I've successfully started a channel, though I feel like my client (kopete) is making things more confusing for me by trying to make them easy. Please let me know if there's something else I need to do.
