OK, thank you all. Ben's advice is probably best in 99% of situations, but if I make an egregious error I may take Scott and Anton's. Ironically, this discussion has wasted far more moderator time, but perhaps this will be helpful to someone else with the initial inclination to worry about such things.

I think the right answer is "don't worry about it." Flagging a post is not a big deal.

@Scott: you can't flag the same post twice.

If you want, you can flag a nearby post (eg an answer if you flagged a question) saying "please ignore my other flag". But if you explained what was wrong in your first flag, then the moderator can easily see that it's been fixed.

I'd just suggest flagging again, saying "don't worry". It's easy for moderators to quickly delete flags. If we see a "don't worry", we don't even need to look to see what the problem is.

I flagged the following post for moderator attention:

http://mathoverflow.net/questions/10525/logical-problems-in-category-theory ,

stating in part that it was a possible duplicate and that it was possibly offensive because of its apparent statements that most category theorists are not serious and cheat on foundations. However, I regret flagging it because the poster was, after a pretty short delay, responsive to my comments and changed the wording. I don't suppose there is any way to "unflag" or otherwise avoid wasting moderators' time in such situations (aside from using more patience in the first place)?
