On a different issue, I now finally understand what Regenbogen said about the connection between the email address and the gravatar. Initially, I was under the wrong impression that the email address for answers (appearing at the bottom of any question) has nothing to do with my profile, and that it is some sort of "per-question" information. But then I clicked on 'edit' for my user information, and saw that this address appears in my profile, with the following explanation: "never displayed, optional notifications, used for gravatar."

I think that's illegal in the US and probably elsewhere. In EULAs like that, the only parts that are binding are the legal parts.

The moderators can see your e-mail address regardless of whether or not you put it in the box (because your openid is through google and uses your e-mail address).

This is only true if you can "see" my email address in the OpenID "https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id?id=aitoawmp3gge-4j4xtk7hj0w1fsb5iaumlby8ua"

I'm not sure about >10000 rep users though.

No. Only ♦ moderators can see the email address field, and there are only five of them. 10k+ users don't get to see anything in user profiles that isn't shown to everybody else too.

You can attach gravatars to emails, ie you can specify a picture of your choice for usage. This will be used instead of an identicon. For some reason I didn't want one of the pictures I specified; so rather than going through the hassle of going to the gravatar website to change all that, I just put a dot somewhere in my email address and the picture changed to a new identicon.

The email address is specified in the userpage. I do not know whether you will get the old identicon back if you change back your email address; but I suspect that you will indeed get it back.

Thank you, Regenbogen. So, if I return to my old email address for answer notification (the one near the checkbox "notify [] daily of new answer"), then my old Identicon (gravatar?) should return? Ah, and while you're here, do you happen to know who can see this email address? (moderators? >10000 rep. users?)

A change of email addresses will surely change your gravatar. I have intentionally done it sometimes to change mine. I mean, adding a few dots here and there in your gmail address does the trick.

Thank you for the answer. Strangely, I usually work from 3 different locations (and, I guess, from 3 different IP addresses), and I have always got the same good old Identicon (now I know the name!).

Right now I'm working from home (one of the above 3 locations), and I haven't replaced my ISP for years.

The square figures are Identicons, which are based on (usually) your IP address. So if you're working from a different computer, or if you're working from the same computer but your ISP changed your IP address, you'll get a new one.

Oh, I did make one change: I replaced the email address for notification of answers. But I'm still using the same account for my OpenID.

Can this be fixed?
