We (moderators) can't completely remove the answer either, but it really isn't a big deal to just leave it as is. Most people can't see it, and for those who can (you and 10k+ users), it's unobtrusive (at the bottom of the page and colored "deleted").

In one case here is what I did: Edited the unwanted answer down to "(Duplicate)" or something like that. Of course I had to undelete it to do that, then delete it again afterward.

The SE2.0 philosophy (as I understand it) is that whatever was posted onto the database stays there pretty much forever, I don't recall seeing a post that was truly obliterated from the database on math.SE.

If the SE1.x software used on MO has the same philosophy (which I suppose it has) then it's pretty hard to remove something from the database completely.

10k users see deleted posts (with pink background) whether we want to or not. It's pretty easy to ignore them, though, especially when, as in this case, the author makes it clear (in the post itself) that he wanted it deleted.

I will give my guess. I suspect only an admin can hide it from you/make it go away permanently. My rationale is that the deleted record may be needed to resolve issues that might occur from when the post was made visible. Unless you are in the habit of viewing this question often, I would not worry about it as only the admins and you can see it. I don't think even 10k users can see the deleted response without additional effort.

I double posted my answer to http://mathoverflow.net/questions/94194/finding-hyperbolic-metrics-by-approximation in a fit of excitement. How do I get rid of/stop seeing the dummy post? Currently it is a sort of pink color, which I take to mean that I can see it but nobody else can. How do I make it go completely away?
