Some advantages I see at this point:
- a worldwide community would be good at tracking down obscure references in multiple languages
- even fairly modest-level mathematicians can make genuine contributions
- errors would be particularly rare!

Some disadvantages:
- consistency -- notation, layout, etc. ]]>
