An unexpected data point - the following Stackoverflow page also exhibits the lengthy
load time behaviour, despite there being no MathJax involved as far as I can
tell.

In this case, after the long delay the syntax highlighting is displayed.

So it seems this is likely to be a Stackexchange rather than a Mathjax issue? (Does Stackexchange have a bug tracker?)

After some further investigation by shogun70, it is still unclear what the cause of this problem is, though it seems restricted to Firefox and may be related to the proxy blocking .otf files.

Should anyone else experience similar problems, it would be helpful if they could leave a note here, to discover whether this is a widespread issue.

I'm involved in the MathJax project and would like to look into this problem.

It sounds like this is a generic problem with MathJax, and not MO. Could you raise this issue at the MathJax users group and it can be discussed there.

Useful info to start with would be:
- browser / version / any add-ons / operating-system
- type of proxy you use - HTTP or SOCKS
- which sites do you experience the issue with (MO, Math.SX, mathjax.org, etc)

Also, do you have access to the command-line utility "curl"?

I think lining up a donation to MathJax is a good idea, but we probably can't easily line up the annual $20000+ that SE donated.

Interesting. We load the MathJax libraries from my personal Dreamhost web hosting. We could switch to using the "official" MathJax hosting of the libraries, although my understanding is that since we're a major user we probably should line up a donation before doing so. This is probably a decent idea anyway...

The MathJax components of MO pages take forever to load when I access the web via the university proxy server, while without the proxy it is pretty much instant. Has anybody else experienced this problem? Is there anything I (or maybe the local IT admins) can do to fix it?

NB this does not seem to be a Mathjax issue as other Mathjax sites do not have this problem.
