Thanks to all who have replied here to my question. I've not had any joy with the question at MSE, so I'll soon re-post it to MO as soon as I have a chance. Maybe I will later post it to Ask A Topologist as well. I originally posted it to MSE because general topology is not my primary research area and I didn't want to irritate topologists here if the question turned out to be exceedingly trivial for them.

I'd like to comment that in general there is no rule of the form "if it does not get answered at MSE then (after some time) post it on MO".

The criterion for posting on MO is quite different from MSE. That said, Philip's question seems perfectly reasonable for MO.

Thanks, Will. I should say that it's not clear I need the result for research purposes, but if I understood how the proof worked, then it might help with a more general problem that I have been thinking about, on and off, as a possible research project. If it had been more urgent then I'd probably have tried it on MO, regardless.

I will probably wait a while longer, in case someone like Alex Bartel has not yet read it. My failure to do the exercise is bugging me, though.

On exactly this point, if people could take a look at Yemon's question http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/65634/exercise-in-isaacss-book-on-character-theory and possibly answer it, I cannot. I don't know that he would thank me for posting this, but i also do not think he should be delayed very much on something he needs for his actual research, after he had concluded that the responsible thing to do was to ask at MSE instead of MO.

On cstheory, we suggest users wait a few days (a week) before cross-posting on another site. Some users who might know the answer don't check the site everyday and waiting a week should not be a problem.

MSE has enough traffic that the front page only shows about 8 hrs of questions, whereas MO's front page shows more like double that. So in some sense MSE's clock is ticking at twice the rate of MO's. A few days on MSE is like a week on MO. If the views to your post appear to level out after, say, two days, I would judge that it is then appropriate to crosspost (with a pointer) to MO.

I apologize if this is essentially a duplicate question; I did try the search function to try to find an answer to my question, to no avail.

Anyway, I recently posted a question on terminology in general topology at

but have received no answers or comments in almost 24 hours. If this trend of silence continues, what is a reasonable minimum time to wait before posting it to MO (assuming, of course, it is suitable for MO)?
