Actually, when we have feature requests like this, it's a great idea for "someone new" to go make it over a meta.stackexchange. That way, we can all vote it up, and suddenly you'll have sufficient reputation over there to vote up all the other feature requests that matter to us!

What I had in mind was that a feature request could be made to the software developers. If I do it as a random guy from somewhere, it is not going to be much effective. On the other hand, if the moderators take initiative, then they may take it more seriously.

Unfortunately, the list of reasons for closing is not something the moderators of this site (currently) have control over. My impression is that questions of the type you describe are conventionally closed as "too localized" instead.

I wish that this item be added to the existing list of reasons. Of course, such a reason would be specific to mathoverflow and not applicable to other similar sites.
