I don't see the problem with having both [g2] and [exceptional-groups] as tags. I think we've agreed in the past that as long as people have a use for them, highly specific tags are fine.

Despite being a huge fan of g2, I agree with Anton that [exceptional-groups] makes more sense. Most stuff in [exceptional-groups] will concern G2 or E8, but when there's ocassionally something about another group I'd want to see that too.

[octonionic-geometry] sounds like a great tag. I'm in favor of [g2] as well; in practice people often talk much more concretely about G2 than the other exceptionals.

By the way, if you're ever searching for mathematical notation and you want to search for special characters, you often have to use a different search engine (if I remember correctly, Microsoft's Bing works), since google purposely strips them out (although I really don't think their reasoning for doing so is legitimate).

It appears that the search function on MO strips out the underscore. The easiest thing might be to use the google search site:http://mathoverflow.net G_2

I feel like the [exceptional-groups] tag would be better than a tag like [g-2], even if the question is about a specific exceptional group. I can imagine somebody following the [exceptional-groups] tag, but it's hard for me to imagine somebody following [g-2] without also following [exceptional-groups].

I've just tried to search for questions/answers involving G_2 (after reading Spiro Karigiannis' extremely nice answer http://mathoverflow.net/questions/49357/g-2-and-geometry/49389) and MO's search engine does not seem to be able to find much.

Can you think of a way to search for the relevant question/answers so that I can then tag them with a "g2" tag?

(There is an "exceptional-groups" tag, not used a lot...)
