Ah, I see you revealed your identity in an MO post. And surely, there is nothing at all unusual about your email address, if you used the same one you show on your home page.

Do you have any unusual characters in your email address? Or is some part of it exceptionally short? (I guess you don't want to tell it to us, or you would probably already have done so.)

I have in the past used email addresses with plus signs and slashes in them, and some sites refused to accept them. In one particularly vexing case, a mailing list I was on was moved to a new mailing list manager, which happily sent me the list mail, but wouldn't let me unsubscribe because it refused to believe my email address was correct. After repeated failed attempts at contacting the list manager, then postmaster at the offending site, I started bouncing every message from the list with a nasty message.

I looked at the faketestsite, but there was no notify box presented when I tried to ask a question, which sort of frustrates the utility of using that to test the e-mail address invalidity.

I edited up a fake test question at MO, to provoke the same error message. Happily, that occurred:

"Oops! Your question couldn't be submitted because:

* the notification email you entered is invalid
* tags are missing"

I left out the tags to help ensure that the fake question wouldn't enter the real question stream.

I was able to post a question with the notify box unchecked.

I have checked the notify box.

I can't reproduce your problem. I tried asking a question on http://faketestsite.stackexchange.com (a dummy site I use for testing purposes ... you're welcome to use it too) and saying that I'd like notifications to go to the email address in your profile. It seemed to work fine. Can you provide a bit more detail? What is the exact error message? Where does it appear?

Try posting a question without checking the notify box. Once the question is posted, you should be able to activate notifications (scroll to the bottom of the page and check the box).

I am trying to ask a question on MO and set notification to my correct e-mail address. But MO declares that my e-mail address, which as far as I can tell is correctly spelled, and has been in daily use for over a decade, is "invalid" and refuses to let me proceed.

I spent some time on MO trying to figure out where to ask this question, and this appears the most appropriate place. Feel free to direct me to the appropriate place.
