By the way, MO was migrated to the beta 6 version of SE this morning. One of the new features is the ability to retrieve orphaned cookie-based accounts. If you're logged out (i.e. if you don't have any cookie to show you're logged in, whether you're registered or not) and you view the profile page of a user, there's a link that says "Is this your account?" If you click it and submit the email you used to create the account, you'll be sent a URL you can use to recover control of the account.
If you create multiple accounts, you'll still need to have a moderator merge them, but the new feature should result in fewer duplicate accounts.
