Did you try using backticks ` before and after dollar signs?

When I type $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{Q}_{\ell})$, it doesn't work. In particular, $\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}$ doesn't work but $\mathbb Q_{\ell}$ does, and $\mathrm{GL}_n$ doesn't work at all.

Or writing the underscore with a backslash.

This one is a little obscure. Sometimes underscores get interpreted as starting italics before getting sent to mathjax. The backticks hack works for issues of this kind.

I've had this issue in the past - I format LaTeX correctly, yet it doesn't work.
