We certainly won't take any action in the absence of a takedown notice from the owner of the material, and i think even then the sense was that that was an issue from whoever was hosting the material, not MathOverflow as a site.

What is the verdict on posting chapters from books or even whole books?

Another example: Hirschhorn's book on model categories was available for free on his website before the published version came out. I have the pdf from his website. Would it be inappropriate to link that sort of thing.
