If this is happening, I don't see the point of merging the accounts. So if somebody has multiple unregistered accounts, I email the owner rather than merging the accounts. Once they register an account, I merge all the unregistered accounts into it. I emailed Gerhard Paseman yesterday, and he said he'd get back to me once he registers an account.

Unregistered users don't show up on the user list (see this meta.SE request) unless you type in their exact display name, but moderators have a way to search for users based on OpenID, email, or display name, which does search unregistered users.

When I type either "gerhard" or "paseman" into the user search box, I find nothing. Perhaps I'm seeing a bug?

I have merged these two accounts.

At that time Anton mentioned something about the benefits of having an OpenID, etc.. Maybe this could be added to the FAQ.

Julia Collins posted a question to MO recently: http://mathoverflow.net/questions/11880/what-primes-divide-the-discriminant-of-a-polynomial

The question was asked before she logged in.

Shortly after she realized she had an OpenID, so now she uses her OpenID but can't edit her original question. There's also the issue of repulation fragmentation between the identity with which she posted the question and her OpenID identity (which have the same name).

Could these be merged into her one OpenID-ed user? I think this is a common issue and I think she's a little unclear about how to go about fixing it. Should users be picking individual moderators and e-mailing them?

Thanks, ]]>
