I was wondering, what is the etiquette for citing an answer in MO? Should we just (in a paper) give the example and said something like "We would like to thank John X. Smith for showing us this example in mathverflow.net" ? What is the appropriate etiquette?

    Thanks

  1.

Some people even cite "personal correspondence" the same way as they cite a paper (i. e., by giving it a reference number), so there is no reason not to cite MathOverflow the same way. Here (scroll down to "Citing") is a proposal.

Thanks Darij: A student and I will be writing a paper and we would like to cite the example you gave us (Decomposition of positive definite matrices). Now I know what the right etiquette is. Thanks for (both!) answers.

Incidentally, note that there is a small "cite" link on every question and answer. If pressed, it produces a reasonably accurate bibtex entry for citing the page.
