I have just noticed that one of my old answers is embarrassingly wrong. I would really like to delete this answer, but unfortunately it was selected as the preferred answer. Would it be appropriate if I delete my answer and leave a comment to the OP?
  1.

Edit it with a notice that it is wrong.

Yes, this is what I will do unless it could be deleted. Do you think that deleting is inappropriate?
  2.

I think it's best to edit it with a note that it's wrong. If you don't do this, it won't be bumped to the top for the person to see.

OK, will do. Thank you for your advice!

    Done!

I agree with fpqc's approach. I'm pretty sure the software actually won't allow you to delete an accepted answer.

  4.

It would also probably be nice to leave a comment on the actual post, so the person who asked the question will get a notice. This does not happen with edits.

I totally agree, and in fact I did it already yesterday (answer edited + comment in post). I feel bad for unintentionally misleading the OP, but I do not know what else can I do to draw his attention.

I don't even know what post you're talking about. I just added that as an afterthought (so if people look this up in the future on meta, they'll see that as well).

Regarding the issue that started this discussion: Just to update that the OP unselected the answer, and I could finally delete it with a clean conscience (sigh of relief...)
