Thought I'd create a thread to chat while the powers that be fix whatever is causing the server not to dish out the MathOverflow page.

Edit: 13 minutes now. No, I'm not suffering withdrawal, it's not time yet.... End Edit

Edit2: Over 27 minutes now. I'm getting a Gateway timeout. Sounds serious. I hope everyone's alright. End Edit2

Edit3: Over 40 minutes now. What's happening? Doesn't anyone know something's wrong? Oh, the agony of not knowing... <whimper> End Edit3

Edit4: 52 minutes now. At least the original error message is back. Small comfort that. Is it time to curl up in a ball now? End Edit4

Edit5: Wait! I'm part of the effort to design and build a replacement. Guess I'd better get with it. Back to work! End Edit5

Same for me. It let me go directly to Meta, but no MO right now.

Looks like I did not get to a couple of stages in dealing with the temporary loss of MathOverflow.

Antics aside, I would appreciate hearing what happened, how it got fixed, and if this has implications for the migration to SE 2.0.

  1.

No knowledge on my part, sorry.

  2.

The site is now working fine for me, but I did take a screenshot of the error message I was getting, on the off chance it will be helpful to diagnosing the problem (I'm using Chrome 13.0.782.107 on Windows 7 64-bit):

    test.

I got a 504 error some minutes before 10:44. MathOverflow is back for me now.

It sounds like the downtime has resulted from network work at Fog Creek. I got this response when I emailed about it.

Just to confirm: these are a few incidents where the entire site was down for 1-2 hours? If so, it's the network work that Fog Creek has been doing. If you're seeing more frequent, intermittent errors then there's something wrong.

We're starting to work on moving things out of Fog Creek's data center and over to the Stack Exchange servers which should be a bit more stable. I'll let you know when we're a bit closer so we can try to find a low-traffic time to do the final move (it'll involve an hour or two of downtime). We'll also need to change the DNS to point to the new server.
