Occasionally questions are posted to MathOverflow that don't belong here but would, in principle, be well-received at MathStackExchange. These questions are generally closed very quickly here, with the poster being advised to try the other site. That's all well and good, but MathStackExchange has standards, too. We don't like questions that are phrased as commands; we don't like questions where there is no indication of how the question came up, what mathematics the poster already knows, what work the poster has already done, where the poster got stuck; we don't like questions that are unclear to the point of being incomprehensible word-salads. In fact, much of what makes for a bad question on MathOverflow also makes for a bad question at MathStackExchange. So I'd like to ask a favor: don't *just* point someone to m.se when you close a question at MO; if the question is not just off-topic but also badly written, please given the questioner some brief indication of the need to do a little editing before posting to m.se.

I'll get off the soapbox now. Thanks.

I agree whole heartedly. But on has to keep in mind that those questions, once asked on m.se, can probably be fixed both by the asker and others. Here, even if fixed, they would still be off-topic!

just a thought...I had mostly settled on Never Mind when I delete a post but a minimum number of characters is required, in this case I was quoting Halle Berry as Ginger in Swordfish, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244244/

I'd say that's more of a thought fragment, Will. :)

Gerry, I think you make a good point. Is there by any chance a link that I could cite when referring someone to math.stackexchange.com?
  3.
Deane, you could refer people to http://math.stackexchange.com/faq#questions and to
    http://meta.math.stackexchange.com/questions/107/faq-for-math-stackexchange
although I haven't checked to see whether every issue I raised is taken up at those two links. One problem is that we are talking about people who didn't bother to read the MO faq before posting here; will such a person bother to read the m.se faq before posting there? I guess it's worth a try.

Gerry, I just tried your idea, but simply put a link to the beginning of this thread instead of MSE faq.

Perhaps I did not carry out the suggestion in a good way, but a drawback can be seen here

A closed question now got edited and thus bumped on MO for the second time, as the OP tries to fix it here.

@quid, you did well. Perhaps eventually OP will get the idea of posting to m.se, and perhaps the post to m.se will be better for your efforts. One can but try.
