Just a general complaint. I seem to be seeing more, or at least noticing more, questions at about a U. S. Master's level, where the OP has made no apparent effort. Two current are:

    http://mathoverflow.net/questions/74554/does-such-a-3-by-3-matrix-exist

    http://mathoverflow.net/questions/74528/how-to-prove-uniqueness-of-matrix-polynomial-and-its-eigendecomposition

I suppose it is particularly noticeable with matrix questions, which usually appear cheesy anyway.

At first glance, I do not see what makes these questions special. There are plenty of questions where I see no prior effort (perhaps sometimes in error).

Quid, you are correct, these are just the recent ones where I left a comment about the lack of effort, and i was sufficiently annoyed to post here. Nothing to be done, really. I do not like the feeling that people are sliding their way through a Master's on MO questions.

If I recall correctly, there were also a lot more sub-par questions in September 2010. So this is perhaps a temporary recurring event... Our second annual MathOverflow Nouveau Festival?!
