How can you stop answered questions from returning to the front page? I vote to close on the basis the the question is "no longer relevant", but that does no good unless others follow suit.

Here is a recent example (one of several):

    comlemented subspaces

I can't see the question you link to when I look at the front page, but in any case perhaps the following discussion is relevant (apologies if it is not):

Thanks, Philip. That tells me how to stop another one from coming back up (just upvote a non answer; the question itself was answered in comments). The one I linked to came back to the front page longer ago--I guess it was upvoted then. (At my age "recent" has a different meaning to me than to the typical MO user.)

I will seize this opportunity to ask some questions that I have since some time (or a long time or recently, depending on ones scale :) ).

    1. Is it true that excatly questions with a non upvoted answer are pumped, in particular that those without any answer are not bumped? (It seems so but not sure.)

    2. If this is so, what is the rational? (I can see why one would want to bump nonupvoted answers, but why not also nonanswered question too, at least if they have some upvotes.)

    3. Could this be changed in principle? (I know 'we cannot change the software' but I have some very vague recolection of Anton(?) mentioning somewhere that one could 'tune' this community user. But perhaps I misremeber. Yet in any case, thus this question.)

I'm fairly sure this is false, and that all questions in the "unanswered list" are bumped. We've had some discussion about this before, though I don't recall anywhere the feature is properly documented: http://tea.mathoverflow.net/discussion/654/automatic-mo-bumps/

@Ben: thank you for the answer and the link. It is just I never noticed this happening, while eg I see that polynomial bijection question so often on the frontpage (but also less highly voted ones with answer come up); it seems some people made similar observations in tha thread.

Sorry for continuing on this theme but I got curious now. I just browsed about the 1000 highest voted unanswered and 1000 oldest unaswered. I can find some without answer and community user activity. But these are really rare. Perhaps 10 in total (for most rencent activity at least). While for those with answer many/almost all have this (as also observed earlier by others).

In case some 10k+ user or moderator should have a minute could they check for me if

    http://mathoverflow.net/questions/44410/

    or

    http://mathoverflow.net/questions/51345/

by any chance might have a deleted answer?

(These are the two questions with most votes without, visible, answer that have community user activty.)

@quid Both have deleted "answers". 44410 has an answer with -3 votes and several critical comments. 51345 has a pointless comment given as an answer with -1 vote.
