I asked a question, HW pointed out the obvious reference (thank you!), and I hit my forehead and said "Do'h!" I decided to delete the question and, after I've had a chance to think, rewrite it in what I hope is a more interesting way. How do I get rid of the embarrassing 40 reputation points I got while this was happening?
  1.

Create fake identities and downvote yourself. (At least this is the only way I know how to do it.)

  2.

On SE2.0 (math.SE for example) you can trigger manual recalculation of the reputation, and the system does that automatically every now and then on its own.

I don't know how it works in MO, but I for one would be happy to have my reputation recalculated for similar reasons. Probably Anton can run that (or perhaps moderators could as well).

It's MO reputation points we are talking about... Unless you are going to brag about it at parties, I'd say it is pretty safe to just forget about them :)

I agree with Mariano -- it's not worth worrying about. Wear your 'Disciplined' badge with pride. ;-)

I was a little sad the question vanished - I thought it was a good one!

I can trigger a recalculation of your reputation. I have to admit I've by now completely forgotten what this recalculation actually does in the event of deleted questions. But let me recalculate you, and we'll see what happens. :-)

  5.

Indeed, your reputation decreased by 40 points.

    Thanks! Neat-o.

There's a rumor that the first user to get to 100k will be awarded a Fields medal. Do you want to reduce your chances?

That's "fields badge", for contributing to questions and garnering 5 or more of each of 100 tags. Be careful of what rumors you spread, Dror.
