    How do I activate my request to be notified when there are new answers to one of my questions? I see a check box for this option under my question, but not what I am used to seeing next in this context: some sort of button to hit with my mouse to activate the request.

    Your request is active once you check the box; no need for an additional click.

    Not what you asked about, but may be of interest: if you want to be notified whenever any of your questions gets a new answer, you can accomplish this by checking the appropriate box in the "prefs" tab of your user page.
