    This question

stays from March and remains unanswered. Is there a way to facilitate the answers by assigning a bounty?

I did not find a manual on how to start it. Also I wonder whether it is possible to start a bounty for a month or so rather than just 7 days?

David answered it as it was posted ($x^2$ is a counterexample) and even proposed a way to make the question more meaningful. What you should really do now is to edit the question so that it asks exactly what you want to ask at this moment. You can accept David's suggestion or do something else, but until this edit is done, the case stays closed and no bounty will help to reopen it.

@fedja this update was there for a long time, you possibly just missed it.

In the bottom of a question you asked, below the comment fields, there is an "Add A Bounty" link. Click that and follow the instructions.

And no, bounty length is fixed in software. We cannot change that.
