    Badges still strike me as, hmm, a bit pointless... but I think their pointlessness is noticeable emphasized by the fact that one cannot tell what caused a badge to be awarded. From time to time I get a message telling me that I've got, say, a "Nice answer" badge... but as far I can tell I cannot know what answer was judged nice.

    Should this be filed as a request for enhancement somewhere?

    I disagree with badges being pointless, but it seems like that's not the drive of your question. Usually you can figure out where a badge came from by clicking the envelope next to your name to see what posts of yours people have voted up recently. Of course, it would be best if the system just told you what the badge was awarded for, and this exists as a feature request on meta.SO, but it is marked [status-deferred] so it's not clear how long it will be before the feature is implemented. The SE team probably won't do it since it's on the SO team's queue.

    In view of someone's recent attempt to summon Graham Chapman's ghost with tired ritual incantation...

    "we don't NEED no steenkin' badges"

    <tumbleweed>
