    (So why is it spelled, even in German, Noether and not Nöther? I guess another example of this is Goethe.)

    @Kevin: I think this is a holdover from the days before German orthography was as rigidly regularized as it is today.

    Also, "Nöter" doesn't necessarily convey the correct pronunciation to anglophones, since the German "er" is pronounced quite differently from most English dialects.

    Perhaps Noethersch is the German translation of Noetherian?

    And yeah, Mark Meckes, the final "er" in Nöter should be pronounced like in gangster -- "gangsta", I mean. Or lover -- luvva.

    Either Noether or Hilbert coined the term, I think, so "Noethersch" probably came first.
