Some questions seem to float up the main list at regular intervals, despite there seeming to be no actual activity on them. They often seem to be associated with (an automatic??) user of the name "Math Overflow".

    For example:
    http://mathoverflow.net/questions/946/operator-valued-weights
This doesn't seem to have had any activity since last year, but it's again on the main screen today.

Apologies if this has been asked before...
  2.

It means that an answer was never accepted, so it's been bumped.

Ahhhh! Okay, that makes a lot of sense (and is pretty sensible).
  4.

I believe it's not only has an answer not accepted, it was never upvoted. A question with no upvoted answer goes in the "unanswered" pile, and these are periodically bumped to the frontpage.

Ah! I used think that closing homework questions - that people were ignoring anyway - was a waste of time. I guess I now understand why you actually have to close them.

I figured it would add something here to link to the user page:

    http://mathoverflow.net/users/-1/math-overflow

A very critical user, this math-overflow is...

It doesn't seem to me that he (she?) bumps questions up once an hour. It seems more like once every few days.

Only one year old and over 400 downvotes. Very precocious. :)
