    What good does it come out of keeping the many, many, many "unknown (google)" users in the list of users?

    I have to agree with Mariano. (Furthermore, some "unknown (google)" users like http://mathoverflow.net/users/4721/unknown-google seem much more enaged than, say, http://mathoverflow.net/users/444/unknown-google )

    What does "unknown (google)" actually mean? That google is their mail provider ?

    I think that Google is simply the name of the OpenID account provider. So there are also some unknown(yahoo), etc. (we unknowns come in many shapes and colors :))
