We tried it for a bit, but it made the page load significantly slower, so we trashed it.
As Harry said, rendering math on the homepage and the questions page is annoying enough for some people that we don't do it. But you can do it yourself by adding a "smart bookmark". Add a bookmark to your browser's bookmark toolbar with the "location"
javascript:loadScript("http://latex.mathoverflow.net/jsMath/jsMath.js");setTimeout('jsMath.Setup.Script("plugins/tex2math.js");jsMath.ConvertTeX();jsMath.Process(document);',200);void(0);
Now any time you want to render the math on a page, you should be able to do it by clicking the bookmark. If you have to click it twice for it to work, try changing the number 200 to something larger, like 500.
Could this be done conditionally upon the existence of, say, a cookie?
Chocolate chip or otherwise?
MacAdemia ;)
Yes, I think that wouldn't be too hard to do. I think I'll get a chance to experiment with it a bit in the next few days. I'll post again here when there's a way to set a preference cookie.
There should now be a new checkbox in the preferences tab of your profile. If you check it, then math will be rendered on all MO pages. Let me know if you experience any trouble.
Nice. It even behaves reasonably when a formula is truncated, as sometimes happens.
