Inspired by a recent discussion on Meta, I wonder if the following is a reasonable request of a feature for the software to have?
At the time of the edit, the user can specify if the edit is trivial (for fixing minor things like spelling or punctuation) or major (for mathematical mistakes or new content or something like that). Trivial fixes don't count toward the "8-edit and CW rule" but also don't bump the question on the home page. Major edits do.
If you think this request if reasonable, please also post some comment on how to better refine the differences between the two!
Actually this has been discussed several times before as a search for "minor edits" (presumably the name was stolen from wikipedia) shows. As far as I can tell, the consensus was that this request is not technically feasible, in that it would require access to the innards of StackExchange which we lack. Its desirability is at least somewhat in doubt, in that part of the point of having questions "perk" is that people can't edit things like other people's posts without attracting notice. As annoying as it is when, say, the entire frontpage is filled by a tagging rampage, it's probably for the best that we notice when people go on tagging rampages.
+1, Bill. I totally agree.
@Ben: I've never had this happen to me, so I don't know the answer, but
If I have an answer. And a 2000+ rep user goes in to fix a typo. Do I get a notification (the same way i get notified when someone comments on my post or answers my question)?
Given the current upheaval at StackExchange, I would bet that all feature requests that require some tinkering with the core are "on hold" for the time-being.
