    I haven't read through all the article, since on hitting the description of Deolalikar as

    An outsider to the insular field

    I could feel my blood pressure starting to rise... (it's the "insular" which riles me)

    Still, I suppose the article does illustrate the profile MO is gaining.

    It's funny how (since the proof wasn't validated) most of the popular press is struggling with writing some kind of process story: either the

    • maverick against the establishment or
    • 21st century ways of doing research or
    • NERD CATFIGHT !!

    I apologise for sounding old and jaded but the actual news hasn't been newsworthy for a long time. Everything has to be given the spin of some conventional plot that's easily digestible, or it won't make it into a newspaper. In that regard, the article is about as much as one could hope for. And while "insular" isn't quite accurate, it does partially hit the mark. Mathematics is a miniscule minority with rather arcane standards from a layman's perspective.
