And all here are free to post responses of all kinds. I don't restrict free speech in any way. And you won't be hearing from me again on either MO or meta without a real research question.

I'd previously closed this thread, saying that it was spam. I've since decided I was acting rashly, and have reopened the thread, just in case. Let's keep it low-key, however!

@Scott : For what it's worth, I agreed with your original decision to close this thread. Posting a link to an off-topic blog (one whose overly personal content makes for rather uncomfortable reading; the very definition of TMI!) is spam in my book.

The whole Andrew L saga has already wasted too many people's time and energy.

Well, at least this thread is the bearer of some good news - let's see how long this promise lasts.

First off,the reason I posted it here was some people told me to get my own blog and get the hell out of here. So I did and I wanted to let people know where it was. I assumed people wanted to know where it was. Unless,of course, they just wanted me gone PERIOD......... Second,I will keep this promise. Hope it makes all of you breathe a huge sigh of relief. And hopefully none of you will hold it against me when I get my doctorate and attempt to make a name for myself. Hopefully all of you will be professional enough to do that. We'll see. Over and out.

I think it was right to reopen this thread, given that similar threads were not closed in the past. See for instance http://tea.mathoverflow.net/discussion/576/who-will-be-at-the-icm/

    (Yeah, AgCl_, I don't follow..)

(Also, in addition to Scott being a moderator, meta is running on his personal server, so it's an even worse example)

@HG: I think the fact that Scott is a moderator makes it a better example; it sets precedence for other users. Meta.MO has been a relaxed place, so I think it would be unfair if Andrew's thread was closed. On the other hand I really appreciate Scott's and all moderators' personal efforts in the site, as I benefit from MO.
  3.

To be fair, it's probably comments like that of HanSolo that Scott was expecting. If this is so, that seems to me like a good reason to want to close the thread before it gets uncivil. This is even more true for a relaxed place, like Meta.MO, since HanSolo's comment was not exactly relaxed. There was no such thing to be expected from the ICM-thread, so I don't see how this comparison holds any water.

Is there any reason HanSolo's comments haven't been deleted? It's an account created for the specific purpose of trolling another user, and doing so quite nastily -- this seems to me clearly inappropriate, even when the other user is widely regarded as a nuisance.

  4.

I agree completely with jbl's last comment.

  5.
I also agree with jbl's comment.
  6.
Same here. AndrewL can be frustrating, but HanSolo appears to be a pure troll. We should do whatever we can to discourage that sort of abuse.

Thanks for the support, guys. I'd have responded myself, but that would have been breaking my word. And it would have just made a bad situation worse.

Please come read my blog when you guys have time. I think you'll find my "crap" to be unique and quite interesting in and of itself.

And I still want to consider all of you my respected colleagues someday soon.

For the record,though-at my very WORST on MO or meta,I NEVER attacked another poster they way HanSolo just attacked me.

    NEVER.

I'm not sure who this really is-although I can guess a few possibilities.

I hope it's not who I think it is-that would be very sad because he's a frequent contributor to our number theory seminar and as far as I know,he and I have never had so much as a disagreement.

By the way,if he's honestly scared of ME,he needs psychiatric help. If by "immune to ordinary social cues".he means I don't pretend to be something I'm not just to get people to like me,he's right.

    "He's a scary guy."

That's HILARIOUS. I'm 5'7' and obese. I'm as scary as a cell phone.

And if he keeps lying about me simply because he didn't like some of my comments here,he's going to meet someone VERY scary-my lawyer.

BTW,it's pretty clear he's trying to provoke an incident. It's already gotten very nasty and personal, despite my best efforts to remain civil. I'd really appreciate it if one of you moderators would step in and chat with him before this gets out of control.

Andrew, most people here genuinely wish you the best, even if some of us have been frustrated by your actions on MO. As for people spitting in your face and putting you down... it is usually best to just ignore them; why should you waste time defending yourself to them? Nevertheless, one shouldn't take this "not caring what other people think" too far--- it _is_ important to keep an open eye focused on ourselves so that we can all improve as human beings. For example, many people were pretty frustrated by Harry in the earlier days of MO, but he seems to have gotten the message and changed himself a bit. As long as we stay on the steady road of progress we can all expect good things to come about in the future.

Andrew, note that there is no guarantee that you have met HanSolo. There have been enough posts to conclude that you can be seen in NYC and CUNY seminars. So I have risked feeding the trolls in order to suggest that you not, for example, ask anyone at CUNY if they are HanSolo, or even ask if they know who it is... Just a thought.

@Will That's a good point. Thanks. There are definitely drawbacks to being as open as I am,that's for sure. @Shevek That's what my goals here really are. I think as frustrating as I can be sometimes,I hope most of the board can in fact see there was never any malice to it. I've tried very hard to rein it in,but it wasn't enough. So I'm going to lay off the main board for awhile. I think it's best for all involved. Remember, everyone here-even the trolls-are invited to my blog to speak thier mind anytime. I'd be a hypocrite of the first order without that policy, right?
