    Are non-spam/flame comments on questions ever edited or deleted by moderators ?

    I don't know if anybody can edit comments, but a few people can delete comments by others, maybe all moderators, maybe all 10K, I would not know. They prefer to ask the people involved to delete their own when there has been unpleasantness. I remember Anton emailing me when a comment of mine was orphaned because of some such process, I just deleted mine as requested. Don't remember much more clearly than that.

    Moderators (not 10k+) can delete comments, but rarely do. A comment could also be automatically deleted if it is repeatedly flagged as spam.

    I remember it happened once or twice before that somebody thought his comments were being deleted, but they actually were never making it to the server because of a connectivity issue (or something).

    Further, at some expense of time, Anton can look in database dumps for deleted comments, if you have a particular comment in mind that you feel requires some detective work. Maybe one day deleted comments will be visible to users >10k.

    @Scott: "Maybe one day deleted comments will be visible to users > 10k."

    Interesting. Do you mean "maybe one day" in the sense of "Maybe one day the smooth Poincare conjecture will be solved?" or in some more proximate sense?

    @Pete, ssshh!

    Scott, we have neutralized your operative Andy Putman. Franz Lemmermeyer is free of his dire shadow. How long do you think this charade can last?
