I think I've received enough answers, and it seems like all of the good answers that can be given have already been given (this is indicated by the number of repeated answers).

I propose we close it as no longer relevant.

If anybody is against closing it, I'm open to leaving it open, but I think it's outlived its usefulness.

  1.

I'm against closing this. I was considering saying something, and others may feel similarly.

  2.

I don't see any reason to close it. It's not like a [big-list] question where answers can uselessly accumulate. If someone has a new answer with new content, I'd be interested in reading it.

I agree with Todd and Qiaochu that the question should be left open. But I do also find the repeated answers to Big-List questions annoying (it arbitrarily inflates the count of answers, and indicates that some late-comers did not spend the time to process the answers previously given).

For CW type questions like this, especially reference requests or questions on pedagogy, I wonder if the following is acceptable:

Flag duplicate answers for moderator attention, and let the moderator delete duplicate answers without further comment

This I hope will allow us to clean-up the CW questions somewhat. (Some of them are rather admittedly useful.) Feel free to shout me down if you don't like that proposal.

(The whole point of community wiki is to improve on existing answers while one can. Instead of posting an essentially duplicate post, the users should be directed to edit the prior answers to include more clarification etc.)
