I found an ancient question of mine registered under "anon" here:

    http://mathoverflow.net/questions/20507/a-decision-problem-concerning-diophantine-inequalities

Would it be possible to merge this with my (SJR) account?

    Thanks.
  3.

I've sent an email to the registered email on the anon account; please reply to that, or let me know if you're unable to.

ps --- on merge requests, please link directly to the relevant accounts, so moderators don't have to search for them.

Peter May has three distinct unregistered accounts, which can be found by entering "Peter May" into the user search.

  5.
    There's a 4th Peter May now.
  6.

I've found these accounts, which I assume are the same person (it is the same gravatar at any rate, I don't know whether that actually implies anything):
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/8069/cat
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/8143/cat
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/8168/cat
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/10398/cat
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/10657/cat
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/10785/cat
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/10892/cat
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/11082/cat
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/11186/cat

They are all unregistered. Perhaps it is a person in protest of the reputation system? At any rate they might be contacted and asked if this is intentional, and if not, encouraged to register and have their accounts merged.

  7.

    @Zev, I've contacted the owner.

  8.

@Zev, and similarly for your Feb 5th post above.

  9.

I only see one (unregistered) account with name "Peter May", so perhaps a moderator has already silently merged these.

  10.
  11.

This "none" user provided a dummy email address, so there's no way to contact them. I'm happy to just go ahead and merge (I can tell they are the same person), but thought I should check first---does anyone think it's a bad thing to merge anonymous uncontactable duplicates?

  12.
I think users with dummy email addresses should not be allowed, actually. Not requiring real names is bad enough.
  13.

What reason is there to merge these accounts? If somebody doesn't want to maintain a coherent identity, I don't want to force them to unless there's some rationale. We wouldn't be so keen on merging these accounts if this person had bothered to make up different names for them. Since these accounts are unregistered, I know with certainty that there isn't any puppetry going on. Has this person been causing some other kind of trouble?

@Andres: Like requiring real names, requiring real email addresses just isn't practical. "Real" dummy email addresses are about as easy to create as dummy "real names." What possible benefit would there be to such a requirement?

  14.

I suppose it's partly a organizational urge on my part, but also the fact that they did use the same name for all of their accounts seems to me to indicate the possibility that they do want to maintain a coherent identity, but have not figured out how to. If it were someone attempting to be anonymous, they would make up different names, and I agree, in that case they shouldn't be merged (nor would I have been able to find any connection between their accounts to begin with). On the other hand, perhaps they want to maintain their identity via the name "none", but want to avoid gaining reputation.

Also, "none" hasn't been causing any trouble - in fact they seem to be contributing quite well.

  15.
    Hi,

Apologies for the inconvenience, but... is it possible to merge the following two accounts:

    http://mathoverflow.net/users/13065/herman-jurjus
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/5901/herman-jurjus

The first account also has a typo in the email address, btw.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  16.

    @Herman: merged.

  17.
@Anton: Thanks! Everything works like a charm, now.
  18.
    Peter May is fragmenting again.
  19.

I've just merged Peter May again. It's not so satisfactory merging unregistered users. Perhaps someone who knows him, or sees him in person, could suggest registering!

  20.

Peter May again. Why not just email him directly?

There are several "YCho"s that I suspect are the same individual. Registered: http://mathoverflow.net/users/11705/ycho Unregistered: http://mathoverflow.net/users/9982/ycho http://mathoverflow.net/users/9995/ycho http://mathoverflow.net/users/10754/ycho http://mathoverflow.net/users/13517/ycho

  21.

@jc, it appears these have been merged. @Moderators -- when you merge according to a request here, could you reply to say you did, so as to avoid other moderators looking again?

  22.

Sorry, that was me. I merged the "YCho"s and lost internet connectivity before being able to post here.

  23.
Apparently I have two accounts which I would not mind being merged. I just noticed this, sorry. Also, has someone contacted Peter May about the above issue? If not, I will be seeing him this Friday, and while I might not be the best to mention it, if someone has a suggested message I could deliver it or some such thing.

Sean, about Peter May, perhaps you could volunteer some handholding. He may or may not have figured out that registering, and then logging in to the same place, are a good idea, and helpful to others who use or administer the site. Also he may not know how to do such things.

For years and years I tried to get Kaplansky to name and save text files on the computer, but he had his own ideas about what to learn and what not to learn. Once I said, you know how they have "Jesus saves," this could be "Kaplansky saves." But he still would not do it, or let me teach him. But I taught him tons of other things, I would show him once, then he would do it and take notes on keystrokes, mouse clicks, and so on, until he could do it himself without me coaching.

    +50 for Will for «Kaplansky saves»!

  24.

@sean: done. I'm afraid you lost 28 points in the score recalculation, presumably due to deleted material.

  25.
  26.

@dan, all four are unregistered; I sent Jason an email telling him I can merge them if he'd like.

Could you please merge the unregistered user
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/14296/john-schulman
    with the registered account
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/7224/john-schulman

    Thanks
  27.

    Josh, done.

  28.
@ scott: I noticed that, oh well.
PS Peter sent me an email asking how to register, so I will post here after I get a reply from him so things can be merged.

I just received an email from Peter May saying he now has an OpenID and has registered so the four different accounts can be merged. If necessary I can forward the communication to a moderator.

    To be more explicit:
    the registered account
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/14447/peter-may

    the unregistered accounts
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/14256/peter-may
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/13674/peter-may
    http://mathoverflow.net/users/11313/peter-may
  29.

It looks like someone is doing this right now! I just tried to merge two of his accounts, only to find one had disappeared out from underneath me! :-)

    jesus you guys are fast.

When I grow up I want to be a MO super-ninja...
(not really, but you guys rock)
  30.

    I've merged the Peter Mays.

  31.

    whoa, that was weird

  32.
how you commented, then the one above you changed?
  33.

@sean: I happened to check meta right after you posted, so I went to go merge the users. As I posted my comment, it had only been about 30 seconds since I finished merging. After I submitted my comment, I saw your "jesus you guys are fast" comment, and I thought, "whoa, sean tilson is fast."

Then I realized that you were responding to Scott's post, but that only compounded the weirdity.

  34.
I actually wasnt responding to scotts post. I posted the first comment, then realized I could be more explicit and was editing my post. Then I refreshed the user page and it changed. I posted the "jesus you guys are fast" while scott was posting his comment. I am just always surprised by how much time you guys devote to this, it is remarkable. Where I come from we would say "You guys are the shit!"
  35.
  36.

    @Andres,

not sure if I can merge those. There's no overlap between the user info, beyond the name "Rajesh D". I'm not convinced that emailing him to ask is worth the effort, either.

  37.
Oh, it is the same user. (The webpage listed on the second one shows a picture of someone you will recognize from the first one.) Anyway, it doesn't matter,
  38.

    @Andres, indeed. Merged.

Please merge the two Nilima accounts,

    http://mathoverflow.net/users/13131/nilima

    http://mathoverflow.net/users/14740/nilima-nigam

At least I think they are the same person, at Simon Fraser
  39.

    @Will, done.
